Texas DPS Increase Law Enforcement for Labor Day Weekend DWI Initiative

The Austin Police Department will be bolstering its patrols on the lookout for drunk drivers

The upcoming Labor Day weekend is traditionally very big out on the area lakes as we mark the unofficial end of summer. The Austin Police Department will be bolstering its patrols on the lookout for drunk drivers starting Friday as part of its Labor Day DWI initiative. The initiative will be in effect nightly from Friday through Sept. 7 between the hours of 9 p.m. to 5 p.m., police officials said in an advisory. Law enforcement across Austin and all of Central Texas are increasing the efforts to keep roads safe for this Labor Day holiday weekend. Some of the recommendations from DPS include to not drink and drive, buckle up, eliminate distractions and check your vehicle before going on the road.

“During the 2019 Labor Day holiday, DPS Troopers issued 102,274 citations and warnings, including 10,506 citations for speeding; 1,461 seat belt and child safety restraint citations; and 938 warnings and citations for Move Over, Slow Down violations. DPS enforcement efforts also resulted in 489 DWI arrests, 358 fugitive arrests and 354 felony arrests.” - Texas DPS Press Release




According to an article by patch.com, in Austin 2019 Labor Day Weekend “No Refusal” Initiative Police made 57 DWI-related arrests, 27 of those requiring an aforementioned bench warrant to draw blood. Another 18 arrests came after consensual breath samples and 12 from voluntary blood samples.


Of these arrests, police said, the following number had enhanced DWI charges:

Remember that if you have been drinking it's cheaper to take an UBER than to chance a DWI in Travis County.
